Here are four sites which have good birding almost any time of the year. Detailed maps show where particular birds are regularly seen. Of course, not all birds are seen throughout the year; most of the shorebirds are here only during the winter, some warblers only during the summer. Birds listed in bold type may be seen year-round in the area.
The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area provides 47 miles of ocean beaches, the Siuslaw and Umpqua rivers, 32 freshwater lakes, an abundance of streams, ponds and marshes, estuaries and salt marshes, grasslands and lush coastal forest.
Great Blue Heron
Birds are numerous in the area, with a total of 247
species. There are at least 137 different bird species present on the
National Recreation Area during any time of the year. They include songbirds,
shorebirds, wading birds, birds of prey and migratory birds. Birds to
watch for include bald eagle, snowy plover, great blue heron, and great
egret. Watchers are thrilled by the sight of up to 300 stately tundra
swans in the shallow, marshy lakes of winter. Also a delight to watch are
the sanderlings scurrying along the beach in tune to the movement of the
waves.
Maps and trail guides, along with assorted bird books are available
at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Headquarters located at the
intersection of Highways 101 and 38 in Reedsport. Also available are
displays, brochures, and a film to familiarize visitors with the area.
