June 2002 From Dennis Sherwood - River's End Guide Service/Ocean Charters:

During the past several years Winchester bay has been closed for salmon fishing starting the 1st of July from the seaward ends of the jetties up to the entrance of the west basin, and then opening again on the 1st of August. This year the bay will remain open. This is good news, and maybe your site could help spread the word.  Also the fin clipped Coho Season runs July 7th - Aug 4th or until a quota of 22,500 fin-clipped Coho is reached. We should have another good Chinook season this year. The commercial boats and sport boats have done well this year weather permitting.

Killer Whales in Umpqua River

I took a couple of gentlemen from the Roseburg Area fishing on the 7th of June. We fished 3 hours outside. They hooked 4 nice Chinook and landed 3: 14#, 19#, and 24#. The one they lost was approximately 20#.

Then we moved up the Umpqua River to about 1 mile above Winchester Bay and saw a pod of killer whales.  My best guess is that there were 15 to 20 whales in the pod. I'm enclosing one of the pictures.

Best wishes, Dennis

Ocean Salmon Season Open from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain

PORTLAND — Ocean salmon fishing seasons opened off the Oregon coast this week for both sport and commercial anglers.

Commercial trollers and recreational anglers may keep all salmon species except coho caught in the ocean from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain from April 1 through April 30, 2001.

Recreational anglers may not retain chinook or steelhead less than 20 inches long. They may use artificial lures and plugs of any size or bait that is no less than 6 inches long (excluding hooks and swivels). Divers are not allowed. Flashers only may be used with downriggers. All recreational gear must have no more than two single point, single shank barbless hooks.

Commercial trollers may not retain chinook less than 26 inches long. They are required to use single point, single shank barbless hooks and may have no more than four spreads per line.

Regulations for ocean fisheries that occur in federal waters after April 30 will be established by the Pacific Fishery Management Council this week in Sacramento. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will approve regulations for ocean fisheries that occur in state waters after April 30 at its April 20 meeting in Portland.
